“We will hold tonight’s special meeting,” said Port Isabel City Commissioner Martin C. Cantu in a signed letter delivered to the PRESS Tuesday.

The letter, and the affirmation, comes after several days of back and forth between commissioners Cantu and Juan Jose “J.J.” Zamora and several other members of the commission, along with other City leadership.

The divided commission members are currently embroiled in a lawsuit spawned after a raucous April 13 special meeting wherein Commissioners Cantu and Zamora called for a vote to unseat former Commissioner Guillermo “Memo” Torres. The motion failed and Torres, in turn, called for votes to unseat both Cantu and Zamora. Those motions carried, ousting the two commissioners.

Cantu and Zamora have since been granted an injunction which keeps them as active members of the commission, pending the outcome of their suit.

Last week’s election saw the defeat of incumbent Torres by a more than 2-to-1 margin, and the re-election of Cantu, who ran unopposed. Eager to continue with City business, Cantu and Zamora called for a special meeting of the commission and drafted an agenda of such, which they submitted to City Secretary Susie Alcocer.

A notice of the meeting, signed by Alcocer, was created on Thursday, May 14, but does not appear on the City’s website. A second notice of the meeting, dated May 16, was posted and signed by Assistant City Secretary Nadini P. Jee.

In the letter delivered to the PRESS, Cantu alleges that City attorney Robert Collins tried to stop both him and Zamora from calling for Tuesday night’s special meeting by filing an appeal with the 13th Court of Appeals, which was denied.

Upon hearing of the appeal, an emergency meeting of the commission was called by Cantu and Zamora just before noon today and was set to come to order just before 2 p.m. It was after this that Cantu himself hand delivered a letter to the PRESS office assuring residents that tonight’s special meeting is still expected to occur.
